...step 5, my drawing of the WH-RV12SL-ANT shows two wires coming off the 90 deg BNC fitting. Ours only has one wire; what's the other one????

The other wire you are seeing does not relate to the 90 degree BNC. It is probably the transponder lead. Each BNC only has one wire.

It is actually 2 separate cables. The 90 deg is for the radio antenna(SL-Ant) cable. The other one is for the transponder antenna(TX-Ant) cable. Transponder antenna cable isn't covered in the instructions for some reason.
