Local news (Albuquerque) just featured an article on an elderly couple lost in an accident in Mora county N.M.They stressed that it was an experimental that the gentleman built himself but did not identify the make.Are we all accounted for?Does anyone have any more info?God rest their Souls.
 
The original VK-30 is not the same as the SR-20/22 that they factory produce. It was designed back in the late 80's as a 5 person, very fast airplane that from what I recall was a little too complex for a "simple" build, and not many of them are flying.

Certainly one of the prettiest and sleekest looking homebuilts, IMHO.

I was Technical Counselor on the VK-30 in the picture... :)
Tom H. did a nice job, it is nicely built, and, during construction, even survived the Northridge earthquake with only minor damage from a garage beam IIRC.

The view from the cockpit is great, but unfortunately there is little structure ahead of the pilot.... :(

I just talked to him a couple of weeks ago, too. Very nice gentleman. The plane certainly draws a crowd on the ramp, and he was very accommodating with showing curious onlookers his VK 30. God bless the family.
 
Wow. What a strange feeling this is...I took this picture on our ramp at work on Monday morning (both of them are sitting in the airplane)...

I was really excited to see a VK-30 on our ramp...never seen one here before. I talked to the gentleman, and he said they were heading for home in New Mexico. Very nice, and loved to show off his airplane. Very sad...
