I'm in Farmingdale at Monmouth Exec. It's outside the Presidential TFR's. 5 minutes to the coast and the Hudson. You can also turn right at the beach and fly the coastline all the way to Cape May if you like, or just cruise past the casinos at A.C. Lot's to see.
Lincoln Park is a good option too but in the footprint of the TFR's. The restaurant is really nice with outdoor seating and great food. Gas is in the $5 bucks plus some pennies area at both. Caldwell is adjacent to Lincoln Park but a delta airspace that is also under the TFR. They will charge you for landing and probably a ramp fee. I never go back there unless I am picking up a passenger. Fuel will be expensive too.
Linden is another option but with all of the helicopter traffic that flies in the corridor. Look on the chart. The airspace is tight!! No food and expensive fuel.
White Plains is a similar option to Caldwell, but on the NY side of the Hudson River.
If I was to do it today, I would use Lincoln Park or Monmouth Exec.
If you end up in the area, I would be happy to help you with the corridor trip. It's not difficult to figure out from the chart but some people get nervous. Traffic is never really a factor if you are a calm and level headed person. If you are dealing with the procedures for your first time, seeing a helicopter or two buzzing around like gnats might cause a little anxiety.
If you don't want help with the trip, you can still PM me and I will simplify things for you. I can also tell you how to get into the East River, which is very much worth the trip.
Andy
EDIT: Order a TAC for NYC now. It will take a while to ship to you I imagine. This was you can begin to think about the trip up the Hudson.
