Am I correct in my interpretation of hte plans, that the nose gearleg fairing is only supported at the top by the intersection fairing?
Has this held-up well for people who have lots of hours on them, or is there a common way to add additional support at the top?

Phil, you want that end of the fairing to be able to flex/slide along the gear leg as the gear leg flexes. Otherwise you will be constantly repairing a cracked gearleg fairing.

What Jeff said.
And,
I glassed a 1/2 x 1/2 x 2 inch long (all dims approx) foam block to the inside of the gear leg fairing close to the top end. This spacer block holds the top of the fairing away from the actual gear leg. The angle of the fairing now also matches the angle of the leg itself.
Then I fit and installed the upper intersection fairing to the lower cowl. I'm using the fairings-etc package.
