It gets hot under that canopy! :p Looking for ways to stay cool. Share any ideas you have.
I recently added a dark static cling sun shade to my RV-6 canopy. It work well and doesn't take up head room like the Koger shade. Also it is much cheaper. Here are some pictures.

Found it easier to do the work inside.

try this

You might try this for $39.00. http://www.kooleraire.com/ Fits right behind the seat in the side by side models. I have one but got it for Christmas and haven't tried it yet. 25 qt. cooler. I recommend using reuseable ice packs/blocks rather than ice. Fairly light and can be used to cool drinks, lunch as well.

Jenkins 'Eliminator' Cooling Vest

Absolutely freezes you. For me, it makes the late September flights down to Waco to eat dinner with Mom after work (when it's 104F outside) possible.

Short review here.

One option, at least :) .

Cooling

Move to Oregon. Its 45 degrees today. Man I miss spring time in the midwest.

I've heard of a spray on tint has any one had any experience with this type of tinting?

Where did you get that material?

A quick scan on google shows that "static cling window film" is available from lowes, advance auto parts, ace hardware, etc.

Brand is Gila at www.gilafilms.com

Ebay has tons of the stuff. I would recomment a name brand as I suspect there are lots of clones around.

I do like what he did with the strips. I'll be curious if they "bubble" and look terrible after a few hours in the sun, or if they start to "fall down". Great idea and please keep us posted so I can try it too when the time comes!

Static cling film

I put the static cling film on the inside of my RV-6 tip up canopy about 7 yrs ago. We put it in as a temporary measure until I found a better alternative. It's still there and has done a great job. I bought it at a local auto supply store. Dave

Plexi incompatible

Gilafilms, and others I've investigated, has the following warning:

"DO NOT apply film to plexiglass, plastic or acrylic windows; the adhesive will cause the materials to become opaque".

Now. What material did you use that does not have this problem?

Ben, go to gilafilms.com and look under automotive "static cling". They make the regular films that use an adhesive, but they also make static cling. I doubt, but would be worth dropping them an email, that it will cause any harm as there is *no adhesive" on the Static stuff.

Found it - and a bargin at that

I just was out to dinner with my wife and we drove past an "auto zone" (in the atlanta area). I was only going to do some "research", but I went in and they had a whole rack of different Gila films. Most of it was the adhesive stuff. But they also carried the Static Cling in 5% pass thru and the 20% pass thru Black. And get this, it was only 9.95 for a role of 24" x 6.5'!

Needless to say, I bought a roll. I'll get the digital camera out and post some shots tomorrow.... I've got building to do tonight :)...

Thanks for the tip, I've been looking for this stuff every since my instructor pulled out a swatch of it and stuck it on the window in a Cessna we were flying into the sun with. I'll have lots left over for "swatches" :)

Static cling source

Ben,
I got mine at Western Auto. Used two rolls of 18" x 64" static cling (about $7 ea.) and cut to size. It's rated a 20%. That means it blocks 80% of sun.
Just flew it again today. Hasn't started to peel off or bubble.

I put it on with water mist and a plactic squeegy that came in the box with the film. Used a hair dryer on it in places to stretch arround curves.

It really helps knock the heat off.

That suit and the cooler thing look interesting. Aerobatics with the cooler are out for sure.

Thanks guys
Mark

The spray on tint is good for automotive taillights, etc, but not for clear surfaces you plan on looking through. If you were planning on just spraying the area above your head and you don't spend a lot of time looking up, it will probably keep the sun off your back pretty well, but you're not going to spot any traffic through it.
