While building my 10, I rent C-172's that don't have any sort of 12v plug in supply.
I get uncomfortable with running my garmin 496 on it's internal battery (never know how long it will last or when I'll be able to recharge).

Any suggestions for a 12v battery pack that I could rig as a power source for rental planes?? Home security alarm battery??

Thanks,

Funny you should say something about this. I just bought an extra 12v cord so I can leave one in each plane. Now, I rely on the 496 battery pack when I'm in the -3. It lasts about 4 hours without weather, 2 hours with weather. Perfect for a local fly around town. I recharge it in my truck at night and its good to go. If the battery were to quit before I do I would use ATC to vector me home, or go IFR (I Follow Roads) ;).

If you need additional time or a safety factor get one of those 12v rechargeable battery packs. Don't get a cheap one.
