I wouldn't fly with my sole mission being to search out new and interesting algae blooms....but, as they state in the article, if you're flying over a body of water and happen to record a good one, why not send it in?

There's at least a little bit of cachet involved in saying you participated in a NASA research program. (You might not want to offer any more details in that particular cocktail party boast. :):) )
 
I signed up months ago, submitted some sample video...I was put on the pilot list but have never been given any missions.
