My preference is the almost all metal jacks that has a phenolic material for electrical insulation. IF one does not have excellent soldering skills with soldering wires to terminals that are part of a plastic housing, the plastic can get hot and start to melt.

I agree with Gary - I have managed to melt the housing on similar (smaller) jacks of that type - the old traditional phenolic ones seem a lot more rugged and capable of taking abuse. Also, if the prongs behind the panel get bent and the plugs feel loose, you can bend the prongs back and make them behave like new!
 
yes, that is certainly a consideration for me, because I cant solder very well. The mouser tabs look a little flimsy to me, but maybe its just the picture. Anyway, thanks for the input.
 
the plastic ones are ****. spend a few extra bucks and get the switchcraft ones.
