Does this look right to you ? (assuming the pictures loads)
Seems like there should be some kind of retention feature here

Nope - definitely not right!

The bracket on the engine requires a cable end that is threaded, and has two nuts that go on either side of the bracket. your cable is designed to have a retention strap that bolts to a horizontal plane and grabs the cable in the groove. You'll either need new cables, or you need to do some adaptation of the engine-mounted bracket to use those cables.

What does the other end of the cable look like???

You may have a cable used for a quadrant, but installed backward.

I prefer the fork type, on the right, for this kind of cable, but don't like the cheesy rivet in the Spruce part. Don't know the material choice either. For a critical cable, I make a fork from 4130 sheet the same thickness as the slot is wide, and add a bar retainer with positive fasteners. An add-on for your existing bracket could be like the lower example. Craftsmanship counts; all edges smooth, break all corners, observe proper bend radius.
