I had an automotive one handy and couldn't get it to work.. (didn't try too hard, though) so ordered the right stuff from Spruce.

I certainly don't know about an automotive valve spring compressor. I live in farm and ranch country and have had many occasions to observe A&P mechanics compress valves. Each and every time, they used ordinary screwdrivers levered against valve cover screws, but it never went that smoothly. I recommend the official tool.
 
saw an idea recently

It was a piece of 2X4 acting as a lever that was hinged say 6" away from the head....A plastic pipe fitting with part of the side cut away so you could get your fingers in there...Basically the pot stood upright on the bench with rags or similar to stuff up from the bottom to hold against the valve heads...and you simply pushed down on the 2X4 to compress the spring.

Looked very workable and cheap!
