I have both built, which I bought that way, I have an rv8 wing kit not started
but was wondering if there is a difference and would a RV 4 tail work on an 8? bigger may be more stable at cruise no?

Just wondering

Something to consider, the -8 Tail is balanced..and might have less flutter worries.

Is the VNE higher on the -8 due to this?

I thought the RV-4 and RV-8 tailplane (horiz stab) were basically the same? I think you'll find the shape and size of the wings are quite similar also - the extra foot of span for an 8 comes from a slightly wider fuselage and wider tips. Of course the internal structure is different, but on the outside very similar.

The -4 horizontal is much thinner top to bottom than the -8. (different airfoil?) I would not use the -4 tail on the -8.

The RV-8 horizontal stabilizer uses the RV-4 inboard rib. The other ribs and spars are from the -6.
