Hello,

Wiring in the jacks for the headphones and mics.
Is it wise to use 2 separate shielded cables, one three strand
for the headsets, and one two strand for the mics ?

Or can i just use one shielded cable with 5 strands for both?

Any thoughts... how did you guys do it?

Thanks

I've always believed in, and advocate using two separate shielded cables.

Carrying an audio level signal that is strong enough to power a headphone on a wire contained in the same cable and inside the same shield as a microphone input wire is asking for a situation where crosstalk and feedback are more likely to occur, which would not be good.

Now having said that, I know of a 4-seat spamcan that has a single multiconductor shielded cable running from the intercom mounted in the panel, all the way to the rear seat headset jacks, with mic and headphone wires intermingled together inside the same shield, and it is working perfectly fine with no ill effects.

If you're using a mono system then 1x2 conductor shielded + 1x3 conductor shielded. If using a stereo then 2x3 conductor wires...all separate. That's the recommendation. I know some intercoms use no shieldeing at all, or sometimes get by with one wire, but the high quality intercoms (PSE & such) recommend separate shielded wires and it never hurts to do things better than the minimum.
