The intake pipes and the oil pan intake manifold (O-540) is sticky to the touch. I tried washing with a brush and mineral spirits but, although some blue fuel die came out, they still feel like there is a thin coat of tar like residue.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an oil leak that's becoming varnish. Does the residue have a particular color? How about some pictures?

Try cleaning it off with MEK...of course that may take the paint off, so just use it on the intake runners :)

Inside surfaces? Gas comes from oil and over a long period of time an oil type residue remains from the constant exposure to the gas. Will need something quite a bit stronger than mineral spirits. Try carb cleaner, as it is designed for this carbon based gunk. Apply, let soak and attack with toot brush or wire brush.
