Since it is recommended to unlatch your canopy before landing off-field, I was wondering what testing or experience there is out there as to the affect an open (partially or fully) canopy has on aircraft control. I own an RV-7A.

Tip Up Canopy

My RV-6A made a successful takeoff with the tip-up canopy unlatched. The canopy "flew" slightly up in the airstream, trailing edge was about 10" or so up, and floating easily, if noisily. The pilot (fortunately, not me) was able to clear the pattern, slow down at a safe altitude, and close and lock the canopy.

Alternatively, he could have come back and landed, and secured the canopy on the ground.

One data point for you. You might find many more if you do a search on this forum, as the issue has been discussed quite a bit.

For my slider, aerodynamic forces will hold it open about one inch. No issue otherwise...
