Does a condition inspection on an experimental qualify as an annual for renewal of an IA.

No!

I just completed helping out at an IA renewal seminar and any inspection done on an Experimental or light-sport aircraft does NOT count toward the IA renewal. Reason being is that experimentals and light-sport both have "Special Airworthiness Certificates." Only "Standard" certificated aircraft count toward renewal.

Yep, I concur with Mel. A condition inspection on an experimental aircraft is, by definition, not an "annual inspection" per the regulations. An IA needs to perform at least one "annual inspection" for each quarter of the renewal in order to meet one of the allowable renewal criteria for the inspection authorization. My FSDO inspector made the point in an easy way. He said that since an IA is not required in order to perform the condition inspection it cannot count toward IA renewal. Makes sense to me!

Cheers!
