A friend of mine is working with the manufacturer during its pre-release testing.
This is the third generation device and is due to be released "RSN".
It is about the size of a hockey puck.
It uses the same satellite technology of the existing SPOT devices.
But here is the cool thing, it has a BluTooth radio in it to link it to your cell phone so you can send text messages from your cell phone while you are in the air. To me that would be a really nice and useful feature.
Apparently there will be no additional charge to send txt messages.
