The valve is aluminum, with 7/8" wrench flats, but the bottom moveable portion of the valve is much larger (and apparently unremovable) so you cannot get a box end wrench on it, or a socket, or even a flare wrench.

So far, open end wrenches just seem to round it off.

Any ideas? I was thinking heat gun, then pipe wrench.

Since the valve is already bad, could you just cut the bottom off below the threads? Some heat and a six point socket should do the trick if you can remove the bottom of it. A good heat gun or careful heat with a torch will help.
