So we had other more pressing issues during the annual, but it seems our airplane doesn't get a good seal any more due to the rust on the tank, and we definitely DO get condensation and even rain getting into the tank. Fortunately the other side is still OK so we use that for takeoff...

Any ideas how to safely remove the rust (and the uneven surfaces) from the tank without getting a spark ? A full (or even worse empty) tank is definitely a fire/explosion hazard ??

Tape it off and clean it with a piece of fine scotchbrite soaked in phosphoric acid. Wear gloves and wipe clean when done.

Thanks! But what about the tank contents ? Should we just leave it or try to drain it ?
I feel the best would be to fill it with water (or something) but then you have a new potential problem after filling it with 100LL, after all there was a lot of water in the tank..
