A few questions for the Rotax experts:

How long can a brand-new Rotax 912 sit unused? Do they do anything at the factory to prevent corrosion? If the engine has been sitting in the packing crate for a few years, will it still be covered under warranty, or does the clock start ticking when the customer takes delivery of the engine?

Thanks!

New Rotax Storage

Bill,
Not sure thread answers Mark's question. Thread addresses storage of installed engines that have been used, not how long a new Rotax can sit in its delivery box. There must be some guidance on this somewhere, maybe from Rotax themselves.

I don't know a number, but if the oil ports are securely plugged, then it should be able to sit a lot longer than a Lycoming. All steel parts in the engine are sealed from the outside air.

Rotax says 2 years. Then they would like all "O" rings replaced. Very expensive. Rotax does have it protected from the factory and if it is still boxed and wrapped it it usually okay. Take a few extra precautions and oil a few parts like cylinders before a first start. Do an extra good oil purge. It will only take another few minutes.
