My oil temp seems a little higher than usual this summer than I remember. It creaps up around 200 in a short climb to 5k from sea level. Is there a way to check if my vernatherm is working?

Thanks,

Hugh.

Oil temps in a Lycasourous can go to 230F with no problem. Hitting 200F on climb out on a summer day is nothing to worry about.

A vernatherm is to keep the oil hot, not an aid to cool it.

Fly it Hugh!

I think the best way is to try another one. Some put them in water, heat the water and observe if they start to expand at around 165F and should be fully expanded at 185F.
Good Luck,

Another good clue is to take it out, and look at the cone that sits in the seat to see if it has a nice complete witness ring where it's been seated. If the ring doesn't go all the way around, there is something wrong with the Vernatherm or the seat.

That said, 200? isn't a big deal. Redline of most Cessna's runs about 240?
