I'm at the stage of drilling the HS-406 rib to the HS-403 spar. The instructions say to follow the Rib Spar Rivet Detail on drawing 3a. However, this detail has an insufficient edge distance shown for the bottom rivet on the HS-406 rib.

Should I go ahead a follow Van's instructions or deviate from the plans to get a minimum edge distance?

I'm incined to follow the plans as the RV-4 is a very well proven design and this rib should have relatively low stresses.

John, you're right, that rib has low stresses on it, mostly just holding the skins' shape. Fudging it into the best position and deviating from the plans a tad hasn't been uncommon on my -4.
