I remove the gear leg fairing to finish them up for painting and noted that where the fiberglass was in contact with the powder coating that is has been rubbed down to bare metal.

I am think that I will use Van's touch up paint and then place a small piece of UHMW tape to protect the legs.

Any problem with this? Is there something else that I should consider?

Kent, I would sand/Scotchbrite the worn spots, spray with zinc chromate, then when done apply a strip of this stuff down each side of each leg. I plan to apply some to mine here shortly before flying it for the exact reason you ran into.
