I don't think this is dealt with in the user manual, but I don't have access to my manual at present.
The antenna of my 296 can be aligned either horizontal or vertical.
Is the an advantage in terms of satellite reception of one way vs the other?

GPS signals are vertically polarized. The actual antenna elements found inside that Garmin "stick" antenna should give better performance when oriented vertically.

How much better? Will it be noticeable?

Too many other variables come into play to allow this to be quantified. Heck, even the position of your hands in the cockpit can play a roll in this equation.
