I have a -8A with 675 hours since first flight with a panel-mounted Garmin 496 installed via an Air Gizmo cradle interfacing with an AFS 4500. Works just fine - but for a lot reasons, I'm thinking of upgrading to a Garmin 696. However, when I check the Air Gizmo cradle for the 696, I saw that it requires a 6.25 X 8 inch hole. I don't have enough room in my panel to enlarge the 496 hole that much.

Does anyone know of a 696 adapter that will fit in the existing 496 hole? I realize that in order to work the 696 will then extend out of the panel - but in my case, that would work.

The 696 has threaded holes in the back. I mounted mine on an aluminum plate. Then attached the plate to the panel. It is not flush... but I like bracing my fingers on the side anyway, in turbulence. Wish I had room for a second 696. It is the best portable ever made. And no fingerprints! I love that.
