Less than a year and the Lithium Ion rechargeable battery in my Garmin 496 is dead as a lump on a stump. Searching around I hear stories that a good number of them die in 2 months, 6 months ... etc. (What's up with that ??)

Have folks been replacing them with Garmin originals at ~ $59 or going with the cheapo's off Amazon for ~ $20 ?

Give Garmin a call. I had good luck with them on the same problem.

I received my 496 in February. My unit would sometimes charge, but for the most part, would not fully charge. I contacted Garmin and they said it is an apparent software problem. The unit is not reading the correct amount of power available on the battery. Jason in Support said that a software update would hopefully be available by late summer.

I am using their software version 3.50, if that makes a diff.

They did send me a replacement battery.
