Yes, you definitely need it. I know it seems kind of crazy to have something in between that just changes protocols, but it won't work without it. See diagram 2-2 at the start of the G3X manual for the overview, then run a search for GAD 29 in the manual and you'll find quite a bit discussing the interface (and the wiring diagrams).

Yes, you need it. Every big EFIS manufacturer has an external ARINC convertor. That?s just the way it is.
