Is there a common problem with the threaded terminal turning inside the sender unit when the wire is attached. The screw will not tighten due to this problem? Guage reads empty.

There was some discussion here on VAF about this topic a good while back that prompted me to install a 2" length of wire with a ring terminal on one end that gets "gently" tighten to the fuel sender terminal screw; the other end has a Faston 1/4" terminal. That way, the sender can be disconnected if need be without disturbing the fuel sender terminal.
