Hello fellow builders,
Just looking for any advice, or pit falls encountered with the installation of the battery in the Forward baggage locker.
We have had to make some minor adjustments (to say the least) to the aft locker to accommodate a wheelchair as my fellow builder and good friend requires it when we land away base. :). Showplanes fastback also started.
So has anyone any tips for the installation up front.

Also if you know of any RV8/8A wheelchair pilots, it would be great to get their thoughts and ideas.

Forward battery

Mark,

You didn't mention the engine or prop you plan to install, but the major "problem" with a forward battery is that it moves the CG forward. If you only need one battery (non-electrically dependent engine) then firewall is a good choice. It will be simpler, and will leave the space in the forward baggage area free. It sounds like you will need this space when travelling if you are filling the rear baggage area with a wheelchair.

Worst case if you put the battery forward, you may need to bolt a bit of lead ballast back under the VS.

Thanks for the info and thoughts. Yes CG is an issue with the placement of the battery up front. At the moment we are looking at the 360 engine, but this may change.
Randy, thanks also for the link. Looks like your setup is what I am looking for.
Will start with the installation in a few weeks.

Regards,

Mark

Depending on your engine, FI or carbeurated, you could use the space in front of the left gear structure instead of the baggage compartment. It is exactly the same size, just on the other side of the fuse.
Even if you have a high pressure pump for FI, it could be mounted elsewhere, like on the FW or under the fuel selector.
The battery would be a bit tougher to get to, but nothing in an airplane is supposed to be easy to get at, is it? Besides, it would make for a bit shorter cable run to the starter. Also, if you use an Odyssey battery, it would fit even better and be lighter.
