Sometimes when using this tool, you find it hard to see the black "dot" because of background color on the material being worked, or for other reasons.

An easy way to solve this dilemma is to shine a flashlight on the exposed "barrel" of the acrylic "target" rod, which enhances the brightness of the area at its base where the center dot is located.

YMMV - But I know this works

Nice trick! I also tend to use the cross-hairs more than the dot….but honestly, whichever comes out of the case first usually gets the job done. Love this little tool - a touch of luxury in the shop!
 
As indicated by Larry's "offering" - they're not cheap ...

But they really help with the accuracy of "hand" measurements.
