I am just getting started on the fuselage. There is an instruction to put an 8 degree forward bend in the firewall. I used a "sharp board" and got a pretty sharp bend at the edges. The middle was more of a gradual bend. I don't have much concept of how this all ties in with the rest of the airplane. Is it important and/or desireable to have a really sharp bend? Any tips on achieving it?

The "sharpness" of the bend is not critical. The bend is just to make the firewall perpendicular to the cowling so that the upper cowling/fuselage joint is not a compound curve.
