I've got an annoying and persistent oil leak. I think I have it isolated to the seal in the vacuum pump adaptor which is resulting in oil being slung about from my SD8 backup alternator.

Any issue with simply removing the SD8 from the vacuum pump adaptor and replacing the gasket and cover. If this solves the leak then I can pull the adaptor and change the seal.

Getting to those nuts is a pain so I'd like to have a diagnosis prior to pulling it all off!

Any issues running with the vacuum pump gear in but not "connected" to anything.

I've heard different opinions and am looking for a tie breaker

If it were me I would go ahead and replace the seal. It will most likely save you taking it apart twice.
There are many of us running around with a Vacuum pump drive gear W/O a Vacuum pump.
