Finally I?ve gotten the avionics wiring, behind the IP. completed. Will be closing things up very soon. Now is the time to finally fiberglass the windscreen and slider skirt. This brings me to my question. Do any of my fellow VAF?ers have a shopping list for the materials needed to complete fiberglass. I hate paying for additional shipping when I could have done it with one shipment but did not know what I didn?t know when I made my first purchase. So my hope is someone has a list of the items they used and that I?ll need to complete the various element of fiberglass?g my 9A Slider.

Thanks

The resins ship as hazardous materials, since you are in FL, one of the boating capitals of the US, WEST epoxy may be easier to pick up locally -

West Marine-146
160 SE US Highway 19, Crystal River, FL, USA

Am sure others will have suggestions, but here's a list:
  1. West Systems Epoxy/Resin, either Junior pack or 'A' pack
  2. LOTS of small cheap brushes - 1/2" and 1"
  3. " Mixing pots = paper cups
  4. " Wooden Spatulas for mixing
  5. Syringes - e.g. 25ml [Epoxy] and 5ml [Catalyst]
  6. Medical Gloves
  7. 1" and 2" glass tape
  8. Low Density Filler
  9. Peel Ply
  10. Rollers
  11. Acetone
  12. Microfibres
  13. (added from Mike's suggestion) Graphite Powder (West 423) as a black pigment

One thing I would recommend is black pigment----------use it for the first couple layers.

It is mixed into the resin before you wet out the glass.

Also, get some flox to make a smooth radius at the bottom of the windshield to top cowl area, just want to blend in the joint so the first layers of glass can lay on something smooth.

Mirco is nice to have around too.

Some common "fillers" added to the resin are;

Micro-----this is just for bulk/thickener, very little structural strength.

Flox------milled cotton fibers, added to resin as bulk/thickener, and
is structurally strong.

Milled glass fiber-----used same as flox, is made from glass fibers.

Cabosil------made from silica. Used to make resin
thixotropic, ----- doesn't run off like straight resin does. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thixotropic

Hope this helps a bit.

Good luck.

I have found that the corregated plastic signs used during election periods make very useful platforms to wet out the glass on. Just go to any street corner and snatch a bunch the morning after an election.
Cut to any size, use as needed, and toss in the garbage. You can also make mustaches out of the glass fuzz and decorate the politico's face.

I also found many uses for the tight weave cloth tape found at Model/hobby shops.
