Ok I got the engine started with some difficulty but am embarrassed to admit the solution. I once again forgot to install a fuse in the fuse block. Luckily I didn't spend more than a couple of houirs trouble shooting before realizing what I had not done. I had a mechanic help time the mags to engine and the bird started right up. Very strong, good compression, (used 11 hours). It was a great feeling to finally get started. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now since I used the wrong hinges on the cowling, I am in the process of removing rivets. What phun!
