how much more hassle is painting when the stabs are on?

I removed mine.

It only takes a few hours to remove and then a few more to re-attach. No big deal.

With the tailpeices remove they are easier to get a good paint job on.

With them on.

My -7 was painted with all the empennage on and they did not prove to be a hassle.

The aircraft was painted in a booth (for auto's) and it was a squeeze. The only hassle proved to be painting under the fuse, due to the lack of height in the booth. It was done first, outside the booth, with the tail lifted about 6'.
