Runs all the time when the master is on. Keep a fuse puller in the plane and use it if you are doing something without the engine running like fooling with the Skyview for awhile. Which is FUN!
And when you update the Skyview from a memory stick:
Monthly database only updates, you can leave the avionics master off.
Skyview system software upgrades - have the avionics master and the autopilot switch ON! This is because system software updates send software to the transponder and the servos and the ADSB box, which have to be ON for that and are not powered through the Skyview (like the ADAHRS and EMS modules are.)
