I'm pickling my plane for the winter, and because I use auto fuel I have drained the fuel out of my tanks. I'd also like to drain the fuel out of the carb (so it doesn't gum up over the winter). Is there a good way to drain a carb without having take it off the engine?

1. turn off the gas at the valve and run the engine until it quits, or

2. remove the float bowl drain plug

Question: since 100LL has such a long self life, would it be better to fill the tanks and carb with some 100LL?

Won't that keep everything from drying out?

Yes.

It is unlikely you will get every bit of auto fuel out of the system (important for long term storage).

The best preventative measure (and easiest because no system dis-assembly is required) would be to add a couple gallons of 100LL to each tank and run the engine for a bit.

Good advice on running 100LL through it. A bit more work (I have to reinstall the battery, and put some 100LL in a fuel can to dump into the tanks), but I did that yesterday. She's asleep for the winter now.
