Is there any point in putting dehydrator plugs in both the top and bottom (i.e. 8 dehydrator plugs) or is this needless overkill and top-only (4 dehydrator plugs) would be totally sufficient?

Went down to 4

I had 8 went to four when I became concerned that a defective dehydrator plug on top would drop material down into the cylinders.

I didn't notice any real change in performance.

Even in Colorado's relatively dry winters, I had some cylinders where both desicators would start to change color and other cylinders on the same engine neither desicator changed. Probably related to which ones had a valve open. For what our engines cost, I want all the protection I can get, so I would go with 8. I normally fly 2-3 times a week, but in the winter I use an engine dehydrator between flights. Did I mention I use a belt and suspenders ?:)

If you can check them over the winter periodically, 4 seems plenty (you can put them in the oven to rejuvenate them), but if you're leaving them without the ability to look at them, then 8 makes more sense.

My opinion only.
