What is the aircraft log requirement and actual check needed for the DAR inspection regarding the pitot / static / transponder functions?

The FBO where I am based wants a small fortune to leak test pitot / static and verify mode C. I will be flying for a 40 hr test period non-IFR and not in a mode C area of course initially.

Its amazing just how little money you have left when you are getting down to the wire isn't it?

Thanks,

Jeff N247DE - Inspection scheduled for 15th

Not to worry

The usual signoff in you log book will be something to the effect of:
IFR if so equiped.

When you are ready fly to a cheaper shop and have the pitot static checked.

VFR Transponder Checks

Well this DAR thinks you need a check of your transponder....

(half way down, under "Avionics")

The VFR requirements of 91.413 (ATC transponder tests and inspections) still need to be met. This web page of Q & A defines what is needed for VFR vs. IFR

EAA Chapter 10 also says it's needed....

A "VFR transponder check" cost can vary, but is in the order of $50 - $75 if I remember the last one I had on my Tiger. It was really a check of the transponder, with a "can" over the antenna, and a check of correct codes being transmitted... no change in effective altitude was involved...

Perhaps you can find one of those mobile pitot/static/transponder test shops. Around here in Norcal there are a few companies that perform this service quite cheaply. I found it handy to have them test the pitot/static system and the instrument calibration. It only cost me about $100 for all the tests - but I was within 30 nm of a class B, so it's not like I had a choice.

i seem to remember the words "if installed" or something like that, ie if transponder is not required and not installed it doesn't need to be checked ( i think). later you might be able to fly to a cheaper location and install it and have it checked. fred
