Hello everyone,

I stopped building in the middle of sealing a fuel tank. I'm now left with:

-Cured fillet on a baffle but I haven't capped the rivets.
-I need to drill out a rivet where the that has a curred cap

My concerns are:
-Can I use MEK to clean the tank again? I don't want to mess the proseal that's done. I'm especially worried about the baffle that has a fillet but not cap on the rivets.
-What are the adhesion properties between old and new proseal?

Anything else I should be worried about?

Thanks,

Paul

Good questions Paul. For reference I took a spin through SAE AIR4069a (the SAE standard for sealing fuel tanks) and Flamemaster's own technical guide for sealant application.

Assuming no contaminants (skin oils, whatever) following the first sealant application, you simply add more sealant.

Neither document suggests a different solvent choice for initial cleaning prior to assembly as compared to cleaning over existing cured sealant.

As for the actual solvent choices, this from Flamemaster:

1. Isopropyl Alcohol TT-I-735 E
2. Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) ASTM D740 E
3. Naphtha TT-N-95 E
4. Solvent Cleaning Compound MIL-C-38736 E

I have no idea what is in MIL-C-38736 E, but AIR4069a specifies MIL-C-87937 and offers a recipe for two optional types:
