My wife is thinking she would like to learn a Garmin GPS navigator while we fly. I currently have a 496 in the panel of our Super Decathlon and I'm thinking a Garmin product would be best for continuity. In our quest to save some $$, does anyone have a direct experience comparing these units ?? I think the primary factor for us would be that the user interface / syntax is the same from the 496 up front to whatever ends up in the back seat.

I put in the 296 in the back because it operates just like a 496, so I can talk a non-pilot through the operation. The backseater doesn't need all of the additional data that the 496 offers. The processor on the 296 is not as fast as the 496, but you can still easily hold altitudes and headings.... and thats what it all about. Plus I have a spare nav in the plane in case mine craps out.
