I am changing from a C/S to a fixed pitch set up, but I need to ferry the bird about 50 miles before my new prop shows up. Can I do that realizing the C/S prop will remain in flat pitch and I will control it with throttle?
Or would it cause damage to the prop or engine?

If the CS prop is at the fine pitch limit the engine will over speed after take off. You can control it with throttle but there may not be much thrust depending on how flat the blades are. If the fine pitch stop can be reset to a more course setting, that would help.
