Was inspecting my lower engine cowl and found a section 1" by 5" that was black and crystallized. I assumed it was from heat but the area was not close to the exhaust pipes. It was covered with the Vans heat shield material. I sanded the area and applied new fiberglass cloth and resin. Anyone have an experience similar. Thanks

Could it be an indication of a breach in an exhaust pipe or similar?

Did you install the heat shield? If not, there was a reason for someone placing it there.
