The Today Show had an interesting feature on Boeing and the 787 as a part of "Where in the World is Matt Lauer." They showed the paint booth and said that the paint adds 600 lbs to the airframe. I would have guessed lots more.

My 7 weight gain of 20lbs seems about right, even though the 787 has 300 times the take off gross weight (540,000 lbs) of the typical RV (1800 lbs).

Another tid bit of information for your encyclopedia of useless knowledge :D

I thought it was interesting that all of Disneyland could fit in that gigantic assembly building!

Had to go to work, and missed the paint part...

At our airline we have a "cost to carry" value for each aircraft type. Basically a dollar number to carry 1 lb of weight around for a year. Depending on the aircraft type, 600 lbs of paint weight might add anywhere from $200,000 - $2,000,000 / year depending on aircraft types. Not sure about the 787 but since it's a very new and efficient aircraft the number would be towards the lower end of the range I suspect.

No wonder AA doesn't have much of a paint job. But hate to polish those things!!!
