Hello All

Just returned from the July 3 ? 6 BAM ( Beating around Mexico) trip. This was proposed as a leader- less Baja Bush Pilots trip, however, most cancelled out right before the leave date.

A great time was had by all of us who did fly the "event". The three airplanes were a Navajo with 4 people, Barry & Carolyn, Tom & Nora, a 210 with Vince & Diane, and us in our Experimental RV6A.

After we checked in through Ensenada. We then landed around 1:00pm at Lorenzo's Airpark, in San Quintin. Debbie and Lorenzo were wonderful hosts, and fed us a great lunch of fish tacos, and nacho chips and drinks. We met a U.S. resident and got to look through their nearly completed home being constructed on a lot right on the beautiful bay, next to the airfield. Afterward, we went in his van and he told us all about the area as we drove to the hotel.

The hotel is called the Jardines (Garden) and has a restaurant next door. The tropical plants, trees, and flowers were beautiful. After checking in to the hotel and resting a little, Lorenzo and Debbie, his wife joined us for dinner.

We all decided that we would go to Meling Ranch the next day. After a leisurely breakfast we went back to the airport. Lorenzo joined us for breakfast and we got to see and learn about the Old Mill hotel and the harbor area on the return to our planes.

Lorenzo had called and made reservations for us at Meling Ranch and they were expecting us. One of their ranch hands picked us up in an old station wagon.

After settling in our rooms, some went in the swimming pool to cool off and we all admired the lovely rolling hills, pine trees, and greenery around the ranch. Before dinner Joan and I took a walk around this beautiful 2,500-acre working cattle ranch, while Vince and Diane went horseback riding. We had a family style dinner that night, roast pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad and vegetables. The weather was warm but not too hot and we slept with the screen door only. We applied bug repellant and that worked well. The generator went off at 10 pm so we used the kerosene lantern.

The next morning: up early for the 8:00 am all-you-can-eat breakfast and then off to Punta Chivato for lunch, with gorgeous turquoise blue to deep blue water views. After landing and walking the short distance to the resort we found Vince and Diane at the open-air seaside restaurant having a coke. Joan and I split a very small tuna sandwich, a dollop of guacamole with ONE chip, and 2 soft drinks for $27. The one fancy casita room they showed us goes for $400. per night. The rooms without an ocean view are $220. There didn?t appear to be many guests?and only 2 other couples for lunch.

We made the short flight to Mulege, to Hotel Serenidad. The others in the Navajo had flown to Loreto for Avgas. We had a good old time swimming and having a few beers and talking. It was VERY HOT and humid. After the pig roast and a good night?s sleep, we got up, had a leisurely breakfast and headed off for home. Barry and Carolyn stayed another day as planned. As usual, Ensenada was quick and easy $14. landing fee, and $4 dollar gas and off we went for San Diego, Brown?s field. Brown?s customs was the easiest as we pulled up and the man came out, and checked all our paperwork as we sat in the airplane. We had an undercast most of the way home to Oxnard but clear when we got 20 miles out.

This was one of the best non-planned trips I have ever been on, met some wonderful people and had a great time. Joan and I would definitely do it again.
