I've got my engine hung on my -8 and was thinking of installing the baffling so I can complete wiring/plumbing of the engine. My idea is to do the basic fitting now while everything is easily accessible and do the final trimming and painting later. The directions say the lower cowling should be in place prior to the installation of the baffling. Is this necessary? Is there some matching of the cowling and baffling that must be done at this time?

Thanks,

There is a lot of information on this site if you search for it. I just finished installing my baffling and found the information to be very helpful. By the way, I used the paper clip method to determine how to trim the baffles.

And you need both cowling pieces fitted before you start.

I'm sure you can do it several ways - for me, the best method is: Mount engine, then mount cowl, then do baffles.

You can do preliminary work on the baffles before fitting the cowl halves.
- rivet the 8 doublers on the 4 side pieces.
- fabricate the various angle stiffeners and tubing spacers.
- fit and cleco the 2 rear subassemblies together.
- fit and trim the rear subassys to the engine as required.
- cut the oil cooler opening on the #4 backwall.
- drill holes for the magneto blast tubes and top spark plug wires.

Put it all aside until the cowl halves are properly fitted and mounted.
