A friend and I may attend the NBAA show next month. We'll be flying my 9A up from Vero Beach, FL.
How GA friendly is ATL? Any recommendations on other nearby airports? We'll need a car rental agency.
Thanks all.

Where is the function? That'll be part of selecting your destination field.

If you're asking if Hartsfield is GA friendly, the answer is not at all.

Peachtree City-KFFC

Easy trip into town, rental cars. No ATC hassles. Non-towered. Lots of RV activities.

FFC to the south, FTY to the west, PDK to the northeast. PDK is the closest to downtown. Some folks seem to think PDK is hectic, and maybe it is... but I did my private there, so it just seems like a walk in the park to me. On the other hand, since I flew a plane based at PDK, I have no personal experience with the FBOs there.

NBAA airport...

I'm based in Atlanta - KLZU. NBAA is being held at KPDK this year. If you can arrange it, maybe you can fly in there...? I know they are closing down mulitple runways for the static displays, so be sure to find out which FBO's are open and acessable for arriving aircraft. Otherwise KLZU(Gwinnett county), KFTY(Fulton county - go to Hill Aviation), or KRYY (Cobb county - try Prefered Jet Center) should be on your short list. It's a 20-25 min drive to P-Tree from LZU, 30 min from FTY and 30 from RYY. RYY has the cheapest fuel of the three, I think. At LZU, Aircraft Specialist (on the south side of the airport next to the restaraunt) is my favorite, no fees and cheapest fuel on the field. Be sure and ask for Jennifer. She's generous with the fuel discounts :D They have an arrangment with all the rental car agencies.

As far as driving to NBAA once you get here......

LZU - leave the airport and hop right onto 316. This dumps you onto 85 south. Exit Chamblee Tucker Road. Airport is down a couple miles on your left. This is the back entrance to the airport.

FTY - Take I-20 east, and exit onto 85 north. Take to Clairmont road exit. P-Tree will be down a number of miles on your right. This is the main entrance to the airport by car. Not sure what the airport has planned for traffic managment.

RYY - Take I-75 south and exit onto 285 east. Follow 285 around to Peachtree Industrial BLVD. Left turn onto Clairmont, and the airport will be on your left. This also brings you into the main entrance of the airport.

As I said earlier, who knows what the car parking situation will be once you get there.

Good luck! Hope I see you there. :)

NBAA

NBAA usually use FTY to park the Demo A/C so it will not be a option. Use PDK, FCC or RYY. 20GA is a little farther out (west) but will be able to handle you.

I will be going to NBAA as well, this year. The last time it was in Atlanta we flew into KRYY. I think we used Preferred Jet Center, but can't remember for sure. Anyway, the service was very good but it was a very long cab ride into town. I have not rented a car at NBAA for many years. Seemed like it spent all of it's time in the hotel parking garage because NBAA has such good shuttle service from hotels to the convention center and from the convention center to the static display airport. (KPDK this year). We are staying at the Omni this year, which is adjacent to the convention center. So, I think I will probably fly in to KPDK this year since it is closest to downtown according to a previous post, but might take a look at KFFC. Either way I will take a cab.

Correct...they've held the last few static displays at FTY. However this year, they will be using PDK instead.

I forgot one thing in the earlier post. I would not try to park downtown at the convetion center. Instead park out at the staic display and take the shuttle into the convention center. It is by far the best way to get there. It runs on a schedule which is provided to you either at the static display or at the convention center. I did this the last few times NBAA was held in ATL and it work great for me. It was a free shuttle last time NBAA was held here, so maybe they'll continue that tradition

It should be a great show this year. I understand that over 200 airplanes will be on display for us all to drool over... :p
