Anyone looked into using regular earbuds for aviation? I'm no EE or i'd figure out the impedance myself. But, the number of different earbuds out there make me want to try it. Yes, maybe with a hand mike....
I believe it is 4-8 ohms for any standard ear piece. Your aviation headset speakers are 300 or 600 ohms depending upon mono vs. stereo (600 ohms total load to the radio/intercom).
Do a search and you'll find what you are looking for. It has been done.
Standard ear buds are 8ohms while your aviation is 600ohms. But just use a Volume Control Module with a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to use them in your airplane. Adjust the volume control for crystal clear audio and you have set the correct impedance match. You will be amazed at how well this combination works, especially for noise attenuation and price.
I use a Bose QC20 with a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter.
For a microphone I use an old Telex 750 headset.
The telex earpieces sit nicely on the QC20 earpieces
to hold them in place. Even if the battery dies the
headset still delivers audio.
I have used it in several different airplanes with no
impedance or volume issues.
Not really fancy looking or even high tech, but very
quiet and comfortable for several hour flights.
I love your earbud headset. Could you explain how you wire the microphone? I wear a helmet and could attach the mic to it. My Zulus are pretty bulky when wearing a helmet.
