Hi!

Just bought me an RV-4, and wondering if someone has any thoughts or experiences about mounting skis.
Living in Norway, putting skis on could extend the flying season from my bush-strip a little, in addition to it beeing extremely fun to have a few more places to land in the wintertime.

Will the undercarriage take the extra twisting momentum from the skis, and where would I fasten the bracing wires and rubber bands?
Hydraulicly operated skis?

Any input will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Great video, but I didn't get the "winter feeling" from it even with the skis mounted...:) Probably the T-shirt and shorts in combination with the latino rythms that didn't match my previous experiences with skis!
Anyway, it certainly looks doable and with acceptable loss of performance, too. Maybe I'll start saving for a set..

Next summer, I will moved to Quebec, Canada then plan to install skis/wheel (light and simple) on my RV for use next winter 2011/12. I want to T/O from an airport and go visit my relatives. I need to be able to land on frozen lake and taxi to my oncle's house (he owns a Bever 550)

I will post the mod on this site, stay tuned

Just found out...

...that there once were skis on a Swedish RV-4 (SE-XIO, now Norwegian reg LN-XIO), which allegedly worked as a charm. I don't have any details of the type of skis, but will post any info if I find.

Remy, I had the same idea, but the other way around. I'll usually operate out of a frequently snow covered grass strip in the winter, and need to land on snow cleared airports. Combined skis and wheels would be ideal.

Hi,

SE-XIO was built by my dad and his sisters husband... As it says here it worked out really well, cruise speed went down about 10 kts, so no big deal on a fast RV 4... The design of the skies where home made, skies where named BIKÖ, initials of the builders... When SE-XIO was sold 2001-2002, the skies went along with the aircraft, i dont know if the Noweigian owner have them or if they still are in Stockholm...

Brgds Dennis, Gällivare Sweden

Will scan a old picture... There are no pictures on the installation itself, this was in the beginning of the 90s... way before digital cameras =)

Yeah, we have the calender back home somewhere...

Try to contact the owner of XIO, he should have the skis, otherwise Tobias Dag?? who bought it from us should know where they are...

Yes we towed some different gliders, actually with really good results... The RV was a bit to fast for the "Bergfalke" Gliders, but with the more modern composite gliders it worked even better than a purpouse built tow plane from Finland, PIK-23...
