After all the discussion regarding what correction factor to use*, there was one point I hadn't seen mentioned elsewhere which could be a safety of flight issue:

It is common practice for mechanics to use one hand to pull on the ratchet and the other hand to push on the head of the ratchet when tightening bolts. This practice is especially helpful when using deep well sockets to keep the socket/ratchet from flopping sideways.

Do not do this when using a torque wrench and extension that is in line with the torque wrench. This practice will lead to improperly torqued bolts. However, it is totally OK to do if you're not using an extension, or if the extension is at 90 degrees to the torque wrench since your "helping hand" will not affect the torque applied to the bolt.
