I have been looking into a type of GPS data logger that is discussed on the SARL, (Sport Air Racing League) web site. The units are supposedly capable of recording GPS location, speed, altitude, and time, and can hold up to 60,000 waypoints.
I am wondering if anyone has tried one of these things out? They cost a little more than $100. The data is stored in the unit, then uploaded to a PC, and can then be displayed as a track on Google earth etc. It seems like it could be a fun toy, along with a great tool for the racers, possibly eliminating the need for pylon turn watchers and much of the timing effort. A great way to review your route of flight, maybe even some flight testing uses since it records altitude and ground speeds etc. Details of how they operate are available in the users manual that is located on the web site.
